Lets be sensible out there!!!

Are people stupid? If I'm driving along in my car and see a billboard saying "Hey, let's be careful out there." I'm going to think "what?" and that will be the last I ever think about it. This new campaign for Gartmore Investments looks like an ad for a new ITV drama, it's pathetic.

Gartmore should remember that nobody cares. I am not going to stop and find out what this ad is for, and there is no way I could ever tell from my car. The only piece I'll read is the part big enough to read, so from this ad I take away "Let's be careful out there". Which means nothing and will probably start me thinking about local crime issues, or a crime story currently in the news. Even people who are interested in Investments will have no idea and drive on obliviously. A total waste of money.

Why not by your money on design magazines of  dress styles, some custom fabric are also available with reviews.  This will not be a waste of time. I just did....

With good design you can sell anything

If it looks good people will buy it. That's what a lot of clever people, like Tom Peters, are saying. They're evangelising about how important good design is to shift products. Surely nothing illustrates this more perfectly than selling New York garbage back to people . I mean come on, a box is only $50! Surely that's a bargain. The power of design eh?

I even have bougth some cheap good design for business casual men and business casual women. Good thing its cheap!!! I was so lucky...

Sony Balls

 I recently commented to someone that I thought the Bravia campaign by Sony was poor. Sure the TV ad is great and people love it but the overall campaign didn't seem to have a strong strategy running through it. 

It's as if all the effort was put into the TV ad and the rest of the activity didn't really matter. The billboard image above was replicated on bus sides and taxis. It's just so dull and really doesn't convey the 'Colour - Like No Other' tagline. Why didn't they think of colourful ways that stopped people in their tracks like the ad? Colour things that are usually black and white maybe - multi coloured zebra crossing, multi coloured Black Cabs etc. Anything that stands out more than that dull black billboard.

Anyway after complaining I read this by Faris, it appears that the ad has saved Sony and TVs are flying out of the shops. So I've started to question the need for integrated strategies? Of course they help to make sure everything fits together etc, but if you've got a great TV ad is that all you need? I thought due to fragmentation etc we needed strong integrated strategies across numerous media to get the message through? Perhaps if your TV ad is great enough this isn't needed? I don't know. But I do know that it makes me feel a bit uneasy to write that. I love strong integrated strategies and I'm sure that's where communications should be heading.

If the TV ad has had all this effect, what was the point of the billboards and bus sides? How much did they add to this campaign? If you've seen the TV ad I suppose it acts as a reminder but I bet that not one person bought a Sony Bravia TV on the back of the outdoor activity alone.

I have found some interesting add of toronto tailor, quilting fabric, they made a cool stuff for greek letter shirts and they even have skirt patterns for sale. I wanted to buy some...

Express your thoughts (with a Post-it note)

I was walking around town yesterday when I noticed a car parked which I liked. The owner had obviously taken time to keep the car in pristine condition. I felt an urge to compliment the owner on the car. But I couldn't. There was no way I could. I didn't know who owned the car, even if the owner returned to his car I'm sure I wouldn't have said anything. But I wanted to express my delight and the joy I had felt seeing the car. 

Then I thought, maybe in the future I should carry around a pad of post-it notes and a pen. If I see anything I like / don't like, I'll just write out a note and stick it on. I liked this idea. I could put my thoughts on everything. 

The buzz surrounding web 2.0 has really made me think about how we can bring the benefits web 2.0 applications into real life. How can each person communicate their thoughts/opinions more effectively, in everything from relationships to opinions on soup to advertising?

I think the post-it notes are a humble start. I'm not imagining that everyone goes about sticking post-it notes everywhere, or that even one person will. I just think it would be really interesting to create a real space in which people could express themselves in written word. Free to express what ever is on their minds.

When I was in New York after 9-11 an empty shop window was filled with cards on which people just expressed their opinion about the tragedy. There was no editing. You just walked up outside the shop, wrote on a card provided and posted it through the letter box. The next day the card was displayed along with thousands of others. People spent hours reading these opinions and thoughts. 

I know the same attention would not be given to thoughts on everyday events or products but it can't be denied that other peoples opinions are important to people. Imagine if you got home tomorrow and you had a post-it note stuck to your bag saying "nice shoes", or you saw a tree with a note on it "what a great tree". I'm sure it would connect and make you think.

So try to your thoughts you may used different things like thin wallet - you can have a thin donut wallet design and write some thing in the sides, for shirts you may want to use tiered skirt also jat down some freaky words. I have tried it with my rave clothes - the thing is I have sewed group of word on it and it looks great. See I have expesses my thoughts to diffent things. I have also got an idea with how to tieatie (I saw this at you tube) - I copied the design and wala. It's a great tie. i also have to thank those toronto tailors - they have shared to me a kowledge on have to sew things. Great thing....

The untapped power of clocks

Whilst out on my jog this morning I began to wonder how long I had been slogging away for, I thought no problem there's a church coming up, I'll check on it's clock. I reached the church and horror - the clock was broke (unless I had been running for 11 hours hah).

I was disappointed. A clock is a public service, it is there as an aid. What is the point of a clock if it doesn't work? 

The church had been converted into luxury apartments and the developer obviously couldn't be bothered keeping the clock going. Doesn't that say the wrong things about the developer? No community spirit? Lazy attitude? 'It's a nice building but who cares about the clock'. It's the detail that counts fool.

Why are less and less buildings built with clocks? I know most people have mobile phones now and watches, but often a public clock can remind you of the time when you wouldn't think to look. Clocks are powerful things. If you see a clock you're more than likely to look, because whatever it says has a bearing on you. Time effects everyone. 

I'm surprised more advertisers haven't used public clocks in someway. I can't think of any advertisers doing this, I'm sure there must be some examples. The most famous clock used formore than telling the time is surely the debt clock in Time Square.

Clocks are so powerfull that I even have a small time to shop some flowydresses, a greenleggings and an orange jumpsuit for some party I am going to attend to. I need to hurry up...

The Radley Dog

I've never really found handbags or purses attractive but there's something about the Radley Dog that makes Radley just stand out. It's all to do with that dog. While it is cute, it's not silly. It's a serious dog as it has no facial expressions, all it does is state the business. 

It's perfect for the audience it's aimed at. The bags are not too flashy but thanks to the subtle dog tag they have more character than a faceless pattern. Perfect. The dog gives Radley a personality, unlike just a label, it's as if it gives Radley a firm framework to work around.

What am I going on about? I'm not sure really, I just think the Radley Dog is great marketing because it's so well fitted to it's audience.

 Aside from bags I also have fancied on floppy hats and some shop dresses that offer fringedress, juniors clothes, vegas dresses, coral dresses, camouflage dresses. I have a different party coming this summer. So I need to go to shop were all of those things are present... Good luck for me....
